Running with the Stars is an after school program consisting of girls and boys in first through sixth grade in the Northern Virginia and Maryland area. Participants train after school two times a week with a coach, typically a parent or teacher, to prepare for a 5K run/jog. This is a non-competitive activity where we encourage the kids to strive for their own personal best. Our goal is to promote overall health and an interest in exercise. Ultimately, the kids will have a great time being active with their friends and build confidence along the way.

I have been married for 24 years and have two beautiful daughters, Dani and Jorji. I started exercising about 15 years ago after putting on weight following my pregnancies. Just running on the treadmill and counting calories, I lost 50 pounds in 9 months and thought, “ WOW! If I can do this, I can help others get healthy and get into fitness as well.” I started out coaching 12 years ago, mainly because my daughters like the activity and to help kids achieve their fitness goals. The idea of Running with the Stars is simply to educate kids kindergarten-6th grade in healthy life habits and encourage them to be active. My daughters and I have run in the Ashburn VillageTurkey Trot and the Nearly Naked Mile at Reston town Center. I have walked in the Avon Two Day Walk in Washington, DC in support of Breast Cancer the past six years, and will be doing my second walking warriors walk to end breast cancer. I love coaching all the kids and can’t believe we will be celebrating 11 years of Running with the Stars

My husband, Dennis, and I live in Ashburn with our two daughters, Mya and Lily. I became a coach with Running with the Stars when my older daughter signed up for the program in first grade. Now that my girls are in high school, they enjoy volunteering at the 5k and cheering on all the runners. My husband can often be seen running loops at the end of the race to bring kids into the finish line. It has been so much fun watching the kids build friendships through RWTS. The progress the kids make from the first week of the program to the end is fantastic. There is nothing better than hearing how proud they are when they finish the 5K at the end of the session! I am excited to be celebrating the 10 year anniversary this year and look forward to many more seasons with Running with the Stars!
